Back in the late 70’s, when both Basie and Buddy’s band released albums with Sammy Nestico’s tune “Ya Gotta Try”, Downbeat compared Basie’s to a Roll Royce.. gliding down the road, unruffled, and smooth. Buddy’s though, was more like a supercharged Porsche. I think that still holds up well.
