Greatest lead player ever?

    What are peoples’ thoughts on the greatest ever? Can we even have a ‘greatest’?

    In my mind I would say Conrad Gozzo is someone everyone mentions when the subject comes up.

    For me, he has the sound, verve, feel, we should all aim for.

    I don’t think he ever played above a high G though. It seems the ‘doubles’ were something lead players started doing after his time.

    Yeah, Maynard and Cat were screaming doubles in the 40s and 50s, but they were not section lead players, more ‘specialists’.

    I don’t know what chair Cat played, but Maynard was on 5th in Kenton’s band I believe.
